Coach Raff is entering his 36th, and final, year coaching track at City High (41st year over all). He is a UNI graduate, where he played football and was captain of the track team. His City High teams have won 10 State Team titles. Coach Raff has had 56 state champions (29 individuals and 27 relays). Little Hawk athletes have won 1 national title (1600 Medley, 2001) and also 7 national place winners. City High has won 16 of the last 17 MVC conference titles and all 10 of the MVC super meets held.
Coach Raff was named State Coach of the Year 8 times, National Coach of the Year (2000), and was inducted into the Iowa Track Coaches Hall of Fame (1997). John retired from teaching in 2001. He and his wife, Sharon, have 2 sons, Mike and David and 3 grandchildren.
Mike is a 1986 City High graduate and a former Little Hawk hurdler and football player. He graduated from Central College in 1991, where he was a member of the football team. He joined the City High Track staff in 1999, after coaching seven years at Southeast Junior High. His duties include coaching the hurdles, short sprinters and meet day arrangements.
Mike has been teaching fifth grade at Robert Lucas elementary since 1992. In addition to his coaching at SEJH he has also been the head sophomore softball, 9th grade football and is currently an assistant with the sophomore football team at City High.
Mike and his wife, Leslie, have two boys, Griffin and Riley.
Tom joined the Little Hawk staff in 2001 after coaching nine years at HMS (Hartley) High School, the last four as head track coach. He is currently a Guidance Counselor at City High and also assists with the Boys' Cross Country.
Tom heads up the distance program on the City High staff and also assists with the school communication and eligibility.
Tom will be married this summer, 2003.
Norm is another City High graduate (1981) and State Champion Shot Putter. He also holds school records in both the shot put (58' 1") and Discus (180' 5") at City High. This will be Coach Balke's 17th season as weight events coach at City High. Norm also previously was a member of the football coaching staff as well as junior high basketball. He currently teaches 5th/6th grades at Grant Wood Elementary.
Norm and his wife, Stephanie, have four children, twins Kayla and Molly, Alex and Breanna.
Mike Raffensperger
Mike is a volunteer assistant working with the high jumpers. Mike is a 1985 City High graduate and three-time MVC high jump champion. He is a four-year Track letter winner at UNI (1986-89) where he held the school record in the javelin.
Adam Kuehl
Adam is a volunteer assistant working with sprints and middle distance. He is a Sioux City Heelan graduate, where he ran on several championship teams. He is currently an Accounting major at the University of Iowa.
Josh Hildebrand
Josh is a volunteer assistant working with 800 and distance events. He is a Decorah graduate and former runner at Luther College. He is currently doing his student teaching at City High.
Tim Casey
Coach Casey heads up the Southeast 7th & 8th girls' program and helps the City High boys' team with numerous activities until the start of the SE program following spring break. He is a huge help in the early season workouts.
