Lilienthal turns in top 3,000
City Highs track runner Michelle Lilienthal ran the fastest indoor 3,000-meter race in the nation so far this spring and West High won five events at the Iowa State Indoor meet Friday in Ames.
Lilienthal won in 9 minutes, 51.20, setting a meet record and coming within three seconds of the all-time state record. It was seven seconds faster than Gillian Mastrianni of New York for best in the nation.
It was Lilienthals first outing of the spring.
Elizabeth Matzen was second in the 60 in 8.08 seconds for the Little Hawks.
Jeni Frudden broke her own West school record, winning the 1,500 in 4 minutes, 45.94 seconds. Her old record was 4:48.20, set last year.
Frudden also anchored the meet-record setting 4x600 relay team. Lynn Dobyns, Laura Jansen and Leslie Smith joined Frudden to finish in 6:44, breaking the old mark of 6:58 set in1996.
Other winners for West included
Maureen Head in the shot put, Kristen Karniski in the 60 and Wests 4x100 relay team of Pearl Ma, Nicky Darling, Natasha Karniski and Kristen Karniski.
No team scores were kept. Over 100 teams participated.
