West takes 5 events

West High won five events - four in meet-record time - in a strong performance against nearly 30 teams Saturday at the Iowa Indoor at the Iowa Recreation Building.

The Women of Troy captured first place in the 4x800, shuttle hurdle, 4x200 and 4x400 relays, and Jeni Frudden won the 1,500 meters in addition to running on the 4x800 winner.

All the West wins except the 4x200 were meet records.

City High was second to West in the 4x800.

West coach Mike Parker noted that no other Iowa team won more than one event Saturday.

"We were pretty excited. This was a great kickoff (to the season)," he said. "When you're able to walk away with five event titles when no one else is able to win two, you've got to be very excited."

City High head coach Terry Coleman said the Little Hawks 4x800 was "probably the highlight of the whole day."

City and West will compete in the Iowa State Indoor on Friday.
