Drake Relays Adds Third Day of Running, Field Events

DES MOINES, IOWA - There will be a new flavor to the 92nd running of the Drake Relays with a third day of running and field events added to the schedule.
New Drake Relays director Mark Kostek has added 10 running events to Thursday's program following the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon. There also will be five field events held. The 2001 Drake Relays are planned for April 26-28. The first day of the combined events will be April 25.
"By expanding the program to Thursday it gives us more flexibility for the rest of the weekend" said Kostek. "We've added some new events like the women's 4x1600 relay and we've now pushed back the men's special invitational pole vault from Friday to Saturday.
"This has been well received from college coaches and we have been in contact with both of the boys and girls high school athletic associations in Iowa."
A record 103 events are tentatively scheduled for the 2001 Drake Relays, surpassing the previous Drake Relays best of 98 events set in 2000.
All seats will be general admission at $5 for the Thursday program. All seats are reserved for Friday and Saturday's session. Tickets for Friday's session are $28 for adult and $10 for high school students and younger. All seats are $28 for Saturday.
The Thursday Hall of Fame Dinner will be moved from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Drake Knapp Center.
Preliminary heats of the women's university-college 400 hurdles are set for 4:15 p.m. Thursday followed by preliminary heats of the men's university-college 400 hurdles at 4:30 p.m. Qualifying in the men's university-college pole vault will start at 4:15 p.m.
A new event, the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, will be contested at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, followed by finals in the men's university-college 3,000 steeplechase (5:05 p.m.), the women's invitational 5,000 (5:20 p.m.), the men's invitational 5,000 (5:45 p.m.), the high school girls' 3,000 (6:05 p.m.), the high school boys' 3,200 (6:25 p.m.), the women's invitational 10,000 (6:45 p.m.) and the men's 10,000 (7:15 p.m.).
Finals in four field events -- high school girls discus, high school boys shot put, high school girls long jump, high school boys high jump -- will also start at 4:30 p.m.
Kostek stated that by moving some field events to Thursday it allowed for the men's and women's university-college hammer throw to be moved back to the Drake intramural field after being held at Johnston High School the last three years.
The addition of Thursday's program will push back the starting time of Saturday's program of scheduled running events on the track from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
The other new event planned is the women's university-college 4x1,600 relay at 4:46 p.m. There will be two divisions of the women's pole vault in 2001, with finals in the new university-college division at 10 a.m. of the Friday session and finals in the special invitational at 11 a.m. during Saturday's session.
The Drake Relays was a one-day track and field affair from
1910 to 1921. A two-day program was incorporated in 1922 when
university and college individual events were added to the meet.
The decathlon was added in 1967, being held on the Tuesday and
Wednesday and later switch to Wednesday and Thursday along with
the heptathlon which was incorporated in 1981.
