City, West win titles

Cedar Falls won two more events than City, but the Little Hawks captured the team title Friday night at the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division meet.

City High had 146 points, winning six events to take its 14th conference title in 17 years, and Cedar Falls had 1381/2 and eight victories in the meet at Cedar Rapids Xavier.

City High's Nelle Trefz anchored the winning distance medley relay and won the 1,500.

"Trefz had another amazing double," City High coach Terry Coleman said.

Jessica Elliott gave City first-place points in the shot put and was second in the discus, Meggan Reed captured the 800, Emily Triplett took the 100 hurdles, and the Little Hawks' 4x400 team, with Reed anchoring, also won.

City High's Camille Jordan was second in both the 100 and 200.

In all, the Little Hawks placed second in nine events.

The long jump was not contested because of poor conditions.

Mississippi Divisional

WEST: A year after taking second in the divisional meet, West reclaimed the throne Friday, scoring 1421/2 points at Dubuque Hempstead.

The Women of Troy defeated Hempstead, second with 117 points, to claim their fourth divisional title in six years.

"It's nice to get back on top of the conference," said West coach Mike Parker. "Tonight, we wanted to be point productive, and we did a nice job of that."

West won five events Friday, but also had two place-winners in nine of 12 individual events.

Robdu Adam led West with titles in the 3,000 and 1,500. Lynn Dobyns won the open 800 and West High took first in the distance medley and 4x400.

The medley team included Liz Huntley, Annie McAleer, Claire Hall and Janet Dobyns. The 4x400 team was made up of Amanda Judisch, Hall, Lindsey Windauer and Lynn Dobyns.

"Robdu winning a double is great, and Lynn ran a 59 in the open (400) and a 59 in the 4x400," Parker said. "Those two seniors did a great job for us today."

Lynette Wilson of Cedar Rapids Kennedy was named the Mississippi Division athlete of the year. She won the long jump, open 200 and 400 Friday.

Parker was co-coach of the year in the Mississippi Division with Brent Siegert of Dubuque Hempstead.

West's Lynn Dobyns and Christian Jacobs were named academic all-conference.

Solon dual

Solon competed in a dual Friday with Alburnett, winning 12 events.

Quinn Morelock won the shot put and the 400 hurdles, and ran a leg on the winning distance medley team. Natalie Miller won the long jump, the open 400 and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 team.
