West, City make strong showing at Dickenson Relays

West High's girls track team won four events and posted several impressive times at the Dickinson Relays Thursday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

City High also had a good day, winning the shuttle hurdle relay and placing well in several other events.

West freshman Sara Wickman won the 3,000-meters in 10 minute, 8.92 seconds - faster than the winning time at last year's outdoor state meet of 10:10.21, run by City High's Nelle Trefz. Trefz was second Thursday in 10:20.04.

Liz Huntley, Naomi Hillsman, Claire Hall and Nicole Novak won the 4x400 relay in 4:06.47, which would have nearly placed at last year's state meet.

Novak and Hall joined Julia Frudden and Janet Dobyns on the winning 4x800 team, and Allison Dirks won the high jump.

"This is probably the best Dickinson Relays we've ever had," West coach Mike Parker said.

Tara Whiting, Veronica Rydze, Annie Fraga and Emily Triplett won the shuttle hurdle relay for City in 37.81 seconds, beating defending state champion Burlington.

The Little Hawks were second in the 4x100 relay to Cedar Falls, which has all four runners back from its state- and Drake Relays-champion team.

The large-school boys portion of the meet will be today.
