City wins Warrior Invitational

Iowa City Press-Citizen

The little-known Little Hawks stepped up to lead City to a title at the Warrior Invitational in Cedar Rapids Saturday.

City, participating without its top three distance runners and four of its top six sprinters, still edged Cedar Falls 127 to 111.

“We had kids placing in varsity events today that have never run varsity events in their life,” said City coach Terry Coleman. “Being able to show that we not only have the kids that everyone knows about, but other kids that come along and work hard every day, was really special.”

What also made Saturday special was Jessie Branstetter. The senior broke the oldest Little Hawk record in the books by jumping 5 feet, 3¼ inches in the high jump.

It broke the mark of 5-3 set by Dawn Alvarez, daughter of Wisconsin football coach Barry Alvarez, in 1987.

“She had already won the event but we asked them to add an extra quarter inch,” Coleman said. “She took a couple attempts at 5-4¼, but at that point she was getting a little tired.”

Junior Jessica Elliott set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 39-5. The toss was good for second place.

“Sometimes we don’t do as well in the field events as we did today,” said Coleman. “That was good to see.”
