The conditions were less than ideal, to say the least. But
the City High Little Hawks wanted to run Tuesday.

At
least that's what they were saying before, during and
after they ran through the bitter cold and gusting winds
to capture the Little Hawk Invitational title with a meet-record
195 points.
Early
in the day, with the temperature dipping below 40 degrees,
City discussed postponing the meet.
"There
were three people in my fifth-hour biology class that
I asked, and they said they wanted to do it," said City
coach Terry Coleman, who wouldn't reveal the names of
those three Little Hawks. "These other schools might find
'em and call 'em up. I'm glad we did it."
Coleman
was especially glad with the results.
City
won 13 of the 19 scoring events, finishing 100 points
ahead of second-place Muscatine.
The
Little Hawk shuttle hurdle relay team of Katy Fraga, Virginia
Dreier, Tara Whiting and Maya Monitto-Webber demolished
the former meet record, finishing in 1 minute, 5.88 seconds.
Even without standout hurdler Emily Triplett, who normally
runs on the team, the Little Hawks broke the one-year-old
record of 1:07.53.
Prior
to the meet, Coleman was hoping to see the shuttle hurdle
team break the meet record, he said.
When
the conditions became less favorable for record times,
Coleman backed off that goal.
City
finished two seconds ahead of second-place Mount Pleasant
in the shuttle hurdle relay.
"Now
is when you see which teams or which kids are going to
stay with it," Coleman said. "We talked the other day,
it could be cold weather, or it could be another competitor
you're worried about, or you're at districts, or whatever.
You've got to know how to be mentally tough."
Apparently
the Little Hawks have that quality.
"If
you let yourself think about how cold you are and how
miserable the weather is, it's going to get to you and
you're going to run bad," Monitto-Webber said. "But if
you just think about running well and running fast, you
can come out and run a good meet."
Fraga
and Dreier finished 1-2 in the 400 hurdles and Triplett
and Monitto-Webber did the same in the 100 hurdles.
"I
love racing with Maya," said Triplett, who won the 100
hurdles in 15.38, edging Monitto-Webber by 16 hundredths
of a second. "She's always right there with me and she
always keeps me motivated. We push each other in practice."
City
also won the 4x800, distance medley relay, sprint medley
relay, 4x100 and 4x400.
The
Little Hawks also got individual victories from Jennie
Funk (3,000), Liz Matzen (100), Katie Krei (400), Nelle
Trefz (1,500) and Ashton Strickland (long jump).
