City takes relays title

By Andy Hamilton
Iowa City Press-Citizen

City High hurdlers Emily Triplett and Maya Monitto-Webber said the Little Hawks wanted to put on a good show Friday for themselves, the home crowd and their cross-town rivals, too.

"We definitely do mean business," Monitto-Webber said. "We've got a lot of high hopes and big goals for this season. ... We can definitely do some really good things."

The Little Hawks did quite a few good things Friday at the Forwald Relays. City set a season-best in 11 events and won the meet with 139 points.

"There isn't really anything to look at and say, 'I wish that would've gone better,'" City coach Terry Coleman said. "That's exactly what we were shooting for. ... It could barely have gone better for us, I think."

West High, which has actually won more state titles (two) under coach Mike Parker than Forwald Relays titles (one), finished second with 113 points.

Parker, though, said he was "as pleased as I've been all year."

Parker's glee stemmed from the performance of junior Lynn Dobyns and senior Jeni Frudden. In Frudden's case, a sub-par 2 minutes, 18.21 seconds for her in the 800, was reason for Parker's optimism.

"We've wondered for a month what was wrong with Jeni Frudden and we found out on Wednesday that she's got a bacterial infection in her lungs," Parker said. "Now we've got ahold of that."

Frudden and Dobyns teamed up with their younger sisters, Julia Frudden and Janet Dobyns, to break the meet record in the 4x800, winning in 9:25.43 to edge City by four seconds.

But the Little Hawks got the better of the Women of Troy for most of the night.

City's shuttle hurdle relay team of Monitto-Webber, Triplett, Katy Fraga and Tara Whiting broke the school record with a state-best time of 1:03.21.

"Now we know we have the fastest time in the state, so it makes us go into (next weekend's Drake Relays) with high attitudes," Triplett said. "Not cocky attitudes, but (we'll) go in and go after it."

City displayed its depth in all areas, getting a pair of distance wins from Jennie Funk in the 3,000 and 1,500. Virginia Dreier won the 400, Jessica Elliott took the discus, and the Little Hawks also won the distance medley, the sprint medley and 4x400 relays.

"We're just not a deep team, which creates for not a great invitational team," Parker said. "I was impressed with many of (City's) events tonight, no doubt about it. I commend them for a great performance."

Lynn Dobyns also won the 800 in 2:17.15, while Liz Huntley and Alison Dirks gave West a sweep of the jumping events. Huntley won the long jump with a leap of 16-2, while Dirks jumped 5-4 to win the high jump.
