City High girls dominate

DUBUQUE -- By rule, dynasties die hard. In Iowa City High's case, they just run on, and on and on . . .

The Little Hawks, winners of three of the last five Class 3A girls' state track titles, turned in another portrait of domination Tuesday night as they hydroplaned to their latest Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division title at Dalzell Field. City High piled up 144 points while winning eight events and posting 19 top-three finishes.

Cedar Rapids Prairie, behind an 800 relay win and solid second-place finishes by its 400 and 1,600 relays, rallied past Dubuque Hempstead late to take second with 89 points. The Mustangs were third with 82.

The Little Hawks, state runners-up to crosstown rival Iowa City West the past two years, are the heavy favorite to be back atop the awards stand this month in Des Moines.

Coach Terry Coleman, who was named Mississippi Division coach of the year, saw his club win four of seven relays Tuesday, including the 1,600 relay, 3,200 relay, shuttle hurdle relay and sprint medley relay.

"I don't think Iowa City West can compete with them (at state)," Dubuque Senior Coach Pat Murphy said. "I think they'll be by themselves. They've got a great team. They're well coached and they've got some outstanding competitors."

Little Hawks distance star Jennie Funk, who followed up her Drake Relays 3,000-meter run championship with a runaway win in the 1,500 (4:46.33), said there's an expectation for success that comes with wearing a City High uniform.

"The expectations are a lot higher than a lot of other teams in the state, just because it's City High and we have a really strong tradition of finishing first, second and third in the state," Funk said. "There definitely is an expectation to do well. It's not a hope or a dream to win. That definitely drives us to work our hardest."

Other City High individual winners included Meggan Reed in the 800 (2:21.01), Liz Matzen in the 200 (26.62) and Katie Fraga in the 400 hurdles (1:06.84).

Cedar Rapids Washington's Morgen Edwards captured athlete of the meet honors, winning the shot put (40-5) and launching a new meet record of 142-10 in the discus.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Brenda Funk won the 3,000 in 11:01.56.

Kennedy's Lynette Wilson scored wins in the 100 (13.00) and 400 (1:00.54). Prairie's Rachel Sippy won the high jump, clearing 5-4.

Jefferson won the 400 relay in 51.45.
