City High wins; West takes 3rd

City High powers to 12 wins

By Andy Hamilton

MOUNT PLEASANT - Meggan Reed said City High's distance medley team had no thoughts of setting a state district record prior to Monday.

In fact, anchor Jennie Funk said she didn't even know such a record even existed.

All the Little Hawk squad was trying to do was reserve a spot for itself in the fast heat at the state meet, according to Reed.

It's safe to pencil City into the fast heat at state. The Little Hawk squad of Ashton Strickland, Katie Lynch, Reed and Funk won the event in 4 minutes, 9.16 seconds, breaking the 22-year-old state district record formerly held by Indianola.

"I didn't even know there was such a thing," Funk said. "But it feels good now that we've got it."

City got about everything it wanted Monday and felt pretty good about taking it, too. The Little Hawks won the Class 3A district meet with 169 points. Mount Pleasant finished a distant second with 97.

City's 12 event winners automatically qualified for the state meet. The Little Hawks are considered to be the favorite to win the state title after finishing second last year, one point behind state champion West High.

"We've been thinking about (the state meet) all season," Funk said. "The coaches have been strategizing since the end of cross country. They always make a lineup for state and then they rip it up. This is just one more step toward state and the goal of winning a state championship."

City got individual victories Monday from Monica Mims in the 400, Katy Fraga in the 400 hurdles, Maya Monitto-Webber in the 100 hurdles, Jessie Branstetter in the high jump and Funk took the 3,000 and 1,500.

The Little Hawks also won six of the seven relays. They finished second in the 4x100 and put up state-leading times in the sprint medley relay and 4x200.

"It's the best I've ever seen," City coach Terry Coleman said of his team's performance. "It wasn't just the number of things we won, although that was nice. To be able to throw up times we did event after event with the numbers we ran, I've never seen anything like it. We just nailed every event."

Mims said the Little Hawk results should put to rest rumblings that they had already peaked.

"We heard rumors that people thought we had peaked and that they were going to get us at state," Mims said. "We came out and proved that we haven't peaked and we've still got more and we're ready to go.

"People are going to be gunning for us, and we know that, but we just need to keep our eyes on the prize, like we've been saying all year. I think we really do have a good chance (at the state title), but nothing's a given."

The distance medley team proved that it hadn't peaked prior to Monday. Funk said the Little Hawks were hoping to finish in 4:14. They were nearly five seconds faster.

Strickland and Lynch ran 200 legs that gave City the lead. Reed ran a 58.8 split with her 400 leg and Funk shaved a second off her previous personal best by running the anchor 800 leg in 2:16.

"I was just trying to get the handoff and make sure I didn't go out of my lane or anything," Reed said.

Reed nearly broke another district meet record in the 800. Reed's time of 2:15.11 would've been the best time in district history, but despite shaving three seconds off her previous personal best, Reed was edged by Mount Pleasant's Allison Werner.
