DES MOINES -- Just three weeks ago, Jennie Funk proclaimed herself "synonymous with second place."
Times are changing quickly.
Funk followed her Drake Relays 3,000-meter title with a Class 3A crown at the state meet Friday at Drake Stadium.
So, when will Funk figure she's synonymous with first place?
"Probably never," said the sophomore from Iowa City High, who took the gold in 10 minutes 11.80 seconds. "I won't be satisfied until there comes a time that I win every race."
As has been the case each of the last five years, the team race has a definite Iowa City angle. Two-time champion Iowa City West leads the team race with 18 points. City High is second with 14, followed by Mount Pleasant (10).
"We set ourselves up pretty nicely," Funk said. "(A disqualification in the preliminaries of the 800-meter relay) was disappointing, but you have to plan for bumps in the road."
West got a 2-3 finish from Robdu Adam and Jeni Frudden in the 3,000, and a second-place finish in the distance medley for the early advantage.
City High was third in the distance medley.
Funk spent most of her first two years chasing Frudden. Now, she's the distance runner in the spotlight.
She pulled away from Adam with about three laps to go, and won by about 11 seconds.
"I was kind of surprised it was her and not (Frudden) running with me," Funk said.
Adam said she was "really happy" with second place.
Mount Pleasant won the distance medley in 4:06.98 behind Allison Werner's 2:12.2 anchor leg. West's Lynn Dobyns briefly passed Werner in the final lap before Werner regained the lead spot at the end.
"I was out in Lane 2, and the girls from Mount Pleasant and City High had me boxed in," Dobyns said. "I knew I had to get around if I was going to have a chance to win. Unfortunately, (Werner) ran really well at the end."
Amanda Judisch, Liz Huntley and Lindsey Windauer ran the first three legs for the Women of Troy, who were timed in 4:07.23.
LaNeisha Waller of Cedar Rapids Washington settled for second in the long jump after winning that event last year as a freshman. Waller jumped 18 feet, 5 inches. Clinton's Angie Hensel jumped 18-10.
Waller qualified with the best time for today's 100-meter finals.
She was clocked in 12.38 seconds in the preliminaries.
"It's all going to come down to my start (in today's 100 final)," Waller said. "If I come out of the blocks first, I'm going to have a really good chance to win."
Washington's Shannon Oster was fifth in the 3,000.
Morgen Edwards of Cedar Rapids Jefferson was fifth in the discus.
City High's Monica Mims and Linn-Mar's Ashley Williams qualified 1-2 in the 400. Williams is the defending champion.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson had the fastest time in the 400-meter prelims while West Delaware advanced with the best time in the shuttle hurdle relay.
The meet concludes today at Drake Stadium. Morning action begins at 8:30 a.m.
The afternoon session begins at 1:30 p.m. with the shuttle hurdle relay final and concludes with the 1,600 relay at 5:05 p.m.
