DES MOINES -- Terry Coleman likened his team to the ocean tide.

``It comes in increments. And you can't stop it,'' Coleman said.

Iowa City High drowned the rest of the Class 3A field at the girls' state track meet Saturday.

The Little Hawks accumulated 65 points, the third most ever by a 3A team.

Their margin of victory, 26 points, was the most ever by a 3A school.

Roll, tide, roll.

City High won just two events -- their sprint medley relay joined Jennie Funk's 3,000-meter Friday effort as winners -- but the Little Hawks had 13 placewinners in 12 events.

``We had some ups and some downs (Friday), but we really buckled down and got down to business today,'' Funk said. ``We have an amazingly deep team.''

Iowa City West, which had won titles in 2000 and 2001, was second with 39 points.

The Iowa City schools have combined to win the last six 3A titles, and have finished 1-2 four years in a row.

DeWitt Central broke Atlantic's four-year hold on the 2A championship, winning with 48 points.

Okoboji was second with 44, Atlantic was third with 43.

Okoboji's Kristin Hansen became the highest-scoring competitor in state-meet history, sweeping the 800-, 1,500- and 3,000-meter races for the third consecutive year.

She ends her career with 10 first-place finishes and 92 points.

Cedar Falls NU High was the 1A titlist, scoring 46 points.

North Linn, behind triple champion Ellen Ries, was the runner-up with 32.

Ries, a freshman, won the 800 meters and anchored the Lynx to victory in the distance medley and 1,600-meter relays.

``Maybe (my teammates) thought I could do that, but I didn't,'' Ries said. ``It was pretty awesome.''

Williamsburg won its sixth straight title in the 3,200-meter relay, taking top honors in 2A (9:29.64).

Iowa City West won the 3A 3,200-meter relay for the fifth straight year (9:18.68). West also won the 1,600-meter relay.

Metro champions were LaNeisha Waller of Cedar Rapids Washington (100), Ashley Williams of Linn-Mar (400) and Cedar Rapids Jefferson's 400-meter relay.
