itself as being the only school in Iowa history to win both the boys and girls
track titles in the same year......FOUR TIMES!
City High is a member of the very competitive Mississippi Valley Conference in Eastern Iowa. At the 1999, 2001 & 2002 Girls State Track Meet, MVC teams took the top three places at the state meet. Fourteen teams from Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and Cedar Falls/Waterloo make up the MVC. Along with City High, teams from Iowa City West, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Cedar Rapids Washington, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Linn Mar, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Cedar Falls, Waterloo West, Waterloo East, Dubuque Whalert, Dubuque Senior, and Dubuque Hempsted make up the conference.
Expectations for the 2005 track & field season are very high. The Little Hawks capped the 2004 season by winning their 6th State Track & Field title. This was the 10th top three finish for the Little Hawks in the last twelve years, and the 8th consecutive year placing 1st or 2nd. In 2004, the experience of seniors Jennie Funk, Nelle Trefz, Camille Jordan, Emily Triplett, Virginia Dreier, and Ashton Strickland led City High to the title. Even with the loses to graduation, the strong sophomore class along with some dedicated seniors and newcomers will make City High an exciting team to watch. City High returns members of every state scoring relay, as well as 6 of 7 members of the runner-up state cross country team. Several key individual point scorers return as well.
The sprints will be lead by seniors, Patrice Jones (2nd place 4x200 relay, 2003 and two time 200m qualifier), Tara Whiting (Drake champions shuttle hurdle relay), Katie Krie (state champion 4x400 relay), Kerry Kamber (state champion 4x200 relay), Signe Mueller (3rd place 4x100 relay), Megan Hichwa (state qualifier distance medley), Valerie Mozena (state qualifier 100m) as well as a strong group of returning sophomores and incoming freshmen will figure to add quality depth to these events. Hurdles look be a strong event again this year. Three of 4 members of the Drake Finalist shuttle team return, as well as 400m hurdle qualifiers Laura Krumm & Molly Sabers. Middle distance events have been very strong for City High the past several years and this year will be no exception. Two of 4 members of the Drake champion 4 x 800 team return (Maggie Leyendecker & Sara Ziegenhorn) and 400m state qualifiers Kelsey Mims and Krista Wiegert. The distance events will be anchored by a largely unheralded group. Field events will be anchored by state qualifier in the shot put Corrie Wagner, shot and discus qualifier Sarah Anciaux, and High Jumpers Samantha Sidwell (state qualifier 2004) and Krista Wiegert. Other key contributors for the 2005 season will be: SPRINTS/HURDLES: Sydni Koenig, Cailin McLane, Elise Mozena, Veronica Rydze, Kelly Krei DISTANCE: Ruhee Arora, Samantha Sidwell, Annie McKay FIELD EVENTS: Valerie Mozena, Tara Whiting. With a very strong group of young runners who will look to contribute this year, City High looks for another top performance in 2005.
